A mountain pass is a navigable route through a mountain range or over a ridge. Passes have played a key role in trade, war, and both human and animal migration throughout history.
Khyber Pass, an important pass between Afghanistan and Pakistan, connects Kabul with Peshawar. The pass has historically been the gateway for invasions of the Indian subcontinent from the northwest.
Passes are found in mountain areas only. Therefore in India passes are generally found in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh. But passes are also present in areas of Western Ghats (Maharashtra, Kerala).
Khardung La(The Highest Pass in the World)
The elevation of Khardung La is 5,359 m (17,582 ft). Local summit signs and dozens of stores selling shirts in Leh incorrectly claim that its elevation is in the vicinity of 5,602 m (18,379 ft) and that it is the world's highest motorable pass.
