Amending Act of 1784 


It was an amending Act of 1781 to rectify defects of Regulating Act 1773. It is also known as Act of Settlement.


Main features were:


1. Governor-General, the Council and servants of the company exempted from the jurisdiction of the

Supreme Court for their official actions.


2. Empowered the Governor-General- and the Council to frame regulations for the Provincial Courts and Councils.


3. The Supreme Court's jurisdiction was limited to tax matters and matters arising in the collection of revenue.


4. It said that the Supreme Court would have jurisdiction over all Calcutta residents. 


5. The act  also compelled the court to apply the defendants' personal law, which meant that Hindus would be tried under Hindu law and Muslims would be tried under Mohammedan law.


6. It stated that appeals from Provincial Courts could be brought before the Governor-General-in-Council rather than the Supreme Court.
