Indian Polity - Evolution Of Constitution Of India - Pitt’s India Act of 1784 - Part -3 #IndianPolity #UPSCNotes #compete4exams #eduvictors

The act is named after William Pitt the Younger, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at the time it was approved. Its purpose was to correct the flaws in the Regulating Act of 1773 by putting the East India Company's administration in India under the control of the British government.

Salient features of Pitt's Act were:

1. The British Government in Britain took direct control of Indian affairs. The Company's commercial and political roles are distinguished.

2. For the first time, the Company's lands in India were referred to as "British possessions in India.

3. It gave the Court of Directors control over business matters while creating a new body named the Board of Control to handle political matters. As a result, a system of dual government was developed.

4. It gave the Board of Control the authority to supervise and direct all civil and military government functions, as well as the revenues of British territories in India.
