1. The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh.


2. In recognition of the Bengali people's struggle for their language and culture, UNESCO announced in 1999 that February 21 would be observed worldwide as International Mother Language Day.

5. Every year on 21 February, 'International Mother Language Day' is organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote mother tongue-based multilingual education.


6. 'International Mother Language Day' was announced by UNESCO on November 17, 1999, and since 2000 this day is being organized all over the world.


7. There are more than 7,000 languages ​​in the world while India alone has around 22 officially recognized languages.


8. The idea of ​​celebrating 21 February as International Mother Language Day was suggested by Rafiqul Islam, a Bangladeshi living in Canada.


9. He proposed the above date to remember the killings in Dhaka in the year 1952 during the Bangla language movement.

One of the main reasons for the extinction of mother tongues is the competition to learn foreign languages ​​for better job opportunities due to globalization.
